General:
Perennial herb from a thick creeping rhizome, spreading-long-hairy throughout; stems erect or ascending, 15-50 cm tall, simple or branched.
Leaves:
Basal leaves long-stalked, the blades kidney-shaped in outline, 3-10 cm wide, palmately-lobed, the lobes 7 to 9, shallow (a bit wider than long), rounded, coarsely sharp-toothed; stem leaves alternate, similar to the basal but reduced and nearly unstalked; stipules brownish, membranous, toothed, to15 mm long.
Flowers:
Inflorescence of numerous small flowers in bracted, terminal, branched clusters; corollas absent; calyces greenish-yellow, sparsely hairy to smooth, 3-4 mm long, 4-lobed, the lobes broadly egg-shaped, about as long as the bell-shaped hypanthium, alternating with 4 lanceolate, shorter bractlets; ovaries superior; stamens 4.
Fruits:
Achenes, 1, egg-shaped, about 1 mm long.

Habitat / Range

Open, grassy areas in the montane zone; rare in C BC, known only from Wells and Barkerville; introduced from Europe.
